MEDICAL - TESDA

Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD)

CSSD, also called Central Supply or Sterile Processing, is a hospital unit responsible for cleaning, sterilizing, storing, and distributing medical instruments and equipment. Its goal is to ensure all tools are safe, sterile, and infection-free.

Key Functions:

Decontamination & Cleaning: Remove contaminants from instruments.

Inspection & Packaging: Check for damage and pack instruments.

Sterilization: Use autoclaves, EtO, hydrogen peroxide plasma, etc.

Storage & Distribution: Deliver sterile items to hospital units.

Documentation & Tracking: Ensure traceability and compliance.

Importance:

Prevents hospital-acquired infections.

Supports surgical and clinical teams.

Maintains compliance with WHO, CDC, AORN, ISO standards.

Promotes patient safety.
